Prison law is a growth area and practitioners, particularly solicitors, neglect it at their peril. 2010 may also see a new prison law contract, requiring firms to evidence prior expertise before being allowed to undertake such work. This course is for the absolute beginner and supposes no knowledge of this area of law. It is designed to give the delegate a thorough appreciation of the key topics and delegates will leave being able to conduct the simpler prison law matters.

Practical Judicial Review for Criminal Lawyers - 6 hours CPD, £149+Vat Judicial Review is one of the most useful remedies in a criminal lawyers armoury, yet very few practitioners use it to full effect, and many not at all. This course will take the delegate through the practical application of judicial review to criminal practice, starting with the different heads of challenge - e.g. legitimate expectation, procedural irregularity etc, and then onto a case study in order that you become familiar with the forms and procedures. The delegate will leave the session confident of being able to identify, fund and action a challenge to the High Court. Level: Beginner.

POCA for beginners - 5 hours CPD, £149+Vat POCA is thought by many to be unduly complex, the reality however is quite the opposite, once you have "got your head around" the basic principles you will be amazed just how easy it actually is. This practical session starts with those basics and takes the delegate through 2 case types - seized cash in the magistrates' court, and POCA post conviction in the crown court. Delegates will leave the course confident of being able to deal with these types of case. Funding provisions are also covered in detail. Level: Introduction. Olwen Davies is a solicitor-advocate (Higher Courts Criminal Proceedings) and a freelance advocate. Formerly a duty solicitor, she was also a Crown Advocate with the CPS. She has experience in criminal courts from the Magistrates to the Court of Appeal. Olwen is also an experienced lecturer and has been an assessor on the Legal Practice and PGDL courses, Police Station Accreditation and CLAS schemes .She has taught on Leicestershire Constabulary's National Foundation CID course, Senior Investigating Officers and probationary police officers. She is the co-author of Jordan’s The Criminal Justice Act 2003-A Practitioner’s Guide.
